Maths Lessons in Wallingford

Educated to PhD level in Maths, I have been tutoring for over thirty years alongside a successful career in Data and AI. I offer both long-term tutoring and short-term pre-exam booster sessions.

Tutoring Experience

I started tutoring whilst doing my PhD, teaching both undergraduate and Master's level students in the Department of Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. I gain immense satisfaction from witnessing that 'lightbulb' moment: when a student suddenly grasps a concept for the first time. Alongside this I taught during the summer holidays at a residential summer school giving disadvantaged 'A'-level students a taster of university-level maths.
I have subsequently tutored at a wide range of levels: from 11+ all the way up to undergraduate maths although I tend to focus on teaching Maths and Further Maths at GCSE; IGCSE and A-Level. I can also help support students preparing for STEP or MAT admission tests.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is tailored to the needs of the students. Consequently, I offer the first hour of my time for free. I use this time to meet with students and guardians to understand your requirements and expectations and to discuss the approach I intend to take.

Tutorials will combine ensuring the students have a good understanding of fundamental concepts together with working through exam-style questions. I often find that tutees struggle to make the jump from "text-book" questions to exam questions and I think it is vital to start practising on these questions - with appropriate scaffolding and support - as early as possible.

Ideally, lessons should be supported by homework to be completed between sessions; the amount of work set will be agreed in advance so that it can fit in with the student's other commitments.
