I am a fully qualified and experienced teacher of History at KS3, GCSE and A Level, I have taught History, Government & Politics and the Level 3 Extended Project Qualification in a large Secondary School for eight years. I have also held Assistant Examiner positions in GCSE and A Level History for the examination boards OCR and Edexcel. My specialism is in teaching students how to plan, structure and write high achieving essays and examination question responses. With a Master’s degree in History and being close to achieving a PhD in History, I am also able to provide support for students of degree level studies in History.
I have taught History to students of all abilities at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5, i.e. ages 11-18. During an Ofsted-based inspection by the local authority I achieved an Outstanding for my differentiated lessons for lower ability/SEN students, and I achieved Very Good in formal Ofsted Inspections for my teaching at GCSE and A Level.
I have also taught A Level Government & Politics and I have tutored students taking the Level 3 Extended Project Qualification. I have also tutored students on a 1:1 basis in GCSE History.
Whilst studying for my PGCE I became one of a very small number of PGCE students invited to become an Assistant Examiner for GCSE History with Edexcel. I later also became a GCSE History Assistant Examiner with OCR and an A Level History Assistant Examiner with Edexcel.
On completion of my PGCE I became a History teacher in a large 11-18 Secondary School, rising after a few years to become Deputy Head of Subject and then, a few years later, to the position of Head of Subject. Within these roles I also mentored and coached trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.
Whilst taking a break from teaching I studied part-time for a Master’s Degree in History, focusing on the early medieval period, for which I gained a Distinction. I am now studying part-time for a PhD in early medieval History with the focus of my research being social rank and status and social relationships in the tenth and early eleventh centuries
I always prepare lessons and tutoring sessions to the ability and needs of individual students, taking into account their own objectives and needs. I differentiate lessons according to the student's ability and have a short-term, medium term and long-term for each student, based on where they need to be by the end of the tutoring. I am available between tutoring sessions to answer questions or clarify some points from the lesson. I also set homework tasks and exam paper questions, as appropriate, and provide structured support and advice on how to format answers to exam paper questions.
