Personal Description:
I am a Winchester based violin teacher specialising in classical violin and folk fiddle. I offer both face to face and online tuition.
I have played the violin for over 40 years, and trained under Gerhardt Dreschler and Ralph Shaw in the North West where I grew up. I have played in orchestras and ensembles including the Cheshire Youth Orchestra, Chester Philharmonic Orchestra and Leeds University Symphony Orchestra. I currently teach a wide and varied range of students, from five years old to retired, and have a full pass rate for my students in the graded ABRSM exams, with a high percentage of distinctions.
Lessons are available during the daytime & evening from Monday to Friday, for students of all ages (5 years upwards) and abilities, tailored to suit each individual's requirements, whether it be working through exams or purely for enjoyment.
As an accomplished guitarist, singer and composer, I also teach guitar. This is generally in a more informal manner to those seeking to play mainly for enjoyment (although I do put students through the lower ABRSM grades where required).
I have an enhanced CRB check and am a member of the Musicians Union, through which I have public liability insurance. Endorsed by Kallikids, and references and testimonials can be available.
Darren lives in Owslebury, just outside Winchester with his wife Avril.

Tutoring Experience:
I have many years experience in teaching a wide and varied range of students of all ages and abilities (up to grade 8 violin), from 5 years old to retired (it is never too late to start!). I can guide my students through the ABRSM grades where required, and also teach folk fiddle. I maintain a full pass rate in my students graded exams, with a high percentage of distinctions.
Tutoring Approach:
As well as being a discipline, I believe that learning an instrument should be a fun and rewarding experience. I am a patient, supportive tutor, and teach in a structured manner, with lessons tailored to suit each individual's requirements. An important aspect of my teaching is to encourage good, appropriate posture and technique from early on in my tuition. This enables his students to adopt beneficial habits in order to get the best out of their playing as they progress. Also, youngsters can be challenging for any teacher, and to this end I have attended an accredited, recognised training course. I love music and passing on my skills and experience in guiding and encouraging my students' general musicality, enjoyment, and understanding of music.
