Personal Description:

My name is Jens . Originally from Belgium, I have been teaching the Ontario curriculum in Science and Math for over 6 years. While my main background is in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I also possess a Master’s Degree in Conflict and Development Studies. I have a teaching degree from the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. I specialize in chemistry and biology, but am also strong in high school mathematics and physics.

As a lifelong learner, I am very curious about the natural world, and aim to awaken this drive in my students. I am an avid cook, gardener, scuba diver, hiker, and traveler. Whenever possible, I try to connect and apply my lived experiences and knowledge to the learning environment.

It is my goal as a teacher and a tutor to not just instill understanding of a concept, but also teach a student "how to learn" effectively. I strongly believe that making mistakes is not just normal and understandable, but a requirement for success.

Tutoring Approach:

The objective during the initial tutoring session(s) will be to understand where the learner is conceptually, what they want to achieve from the tutoring sessions. As we progress, any gaps in knowledge and understanding will be addressed, and concepts will be reviewed and explained where necessary. After each session, there will be some time taken to summarize, review (what works well? What were some areas of struggle?) and make a concrete plan to help reach the goals set by the learner. This may include additional practice and trying out new strategies.
